All the Basics about Procrastination
Procrastination Literary Definition
Procrastination - "The action of delaying or postponing something."
Society's biggest enemy. The thing you can never see, smell or hear, but the thing that effects you and your work ethic all the same. That "thing" has a name, and it is called procrastination. Studies show that procrastination effects about 80% to 90% of student and college learners. The act of procrastination is the active avoidance of your work or task. Whether that be school work, or anything else in your life, avoidance is all the same and trust me no matter how hard you try that "something" your avoiding will always come back to find you.
What Causes Procrastination?
"You may delay, but time will not." - Benjamin Franklin
According to an article in "The Times" the word procrastination is derived from the latin verb procrastinare, which means to "put off until tomorrow." But what a lot of other people don't know is the word procrastination is also derived from the greek word "akrasia" which means to "do something against your better judgement." Research says that the reason why people procrastinate things is not because they are lazy, it is because they attach negative emotions to the task which causes their brain to avoid the task.
What Causes Procrastination? Pt. 2
"You can't get much done in life if you only work on the days you feel good." - Jerry West
Expanding on the idea mentioned in the box pervious, procrastination isn't a deliberate show of laziness, but more your brains version of coping with something you have attached negative emotions too. In layman's terms procrastination can be understood as your short term fix to a long term problem. When you first procrastinate a project think of why you do? It could be because you know the project will be a lot of work and you don't want to do all of that work in that moment. So in turn you procrastinate in that moment and choose to say you will do it at a later point. This is your short term fix to a long term problem.
